Essential Apps (3)
I am not exactly anti-microsoft but I love opensource software as well tiny apps with great functunality. Here is an my essential must have applications.
Notepad2; replacement for Notepad. Notepad is nice piece but Notepad2 makes life even easier when it comes to editing. It has synatax scheme for most programming languages. Notepad2 is some whooping 500kb, if that is a problem I will suggest you have a look at metapad which is just as good. You can make Notepad2/metapad your default notepad by following instructions here.
xplorer lite; replacement for explorer. The only main feature xplorer lite is missing is the powerful search command for files that come with pro version. I currently use an earlier alpha build of the application which does have the search function.
K-meleon; replacement for Internet Explorer. K-meleon is based on the Gecko layout engine (the rendering engine of Mozilla). [check my earlier post]
Edexter; Internet filter for ads and offensive sites. It replaces the ads/sites with either a tiny image or a white background. (Host File Updated Regularly here)
Resource Hacker; nice little application. Use to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files
Izarc Zip; does a WinZip and more but for free.
Foobar2000; Winamp is good as well but foobar2000 has tabs for different playist.
WinScp; open source SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) and SCP (Secure CoPy) client for Windows using SSH (Secure SHell).
LiteShell; A tiny ultra-fast shell for Windows. Tray Module (replaces windows tray) and Task Module (replaces the taskbar).
