I am one of those of people who try a new product (once, if it fails it will never be tried again) because it was advertised. The sink in bathroom was blocked again. Only 9months ago a plumber was called in to sort it out and it was up and running in no time. The same symptons started showing recently, we tried the sink plunger - no result. (a picture of sink plunger is available here)
Seeing the advert for Mr Muscle Sink & Plughole Unblocker and its catchy slogan ‘loves the jobs you hate’ - It seemed I had found the solution. I told my sister to pick up a bottle from Tesco. We read the label and proceeded with caution. The entire contents was poured down blocked plughole and it was left overnight to allow it work effectively. My Mom got up in morning and completed the last step in the instructions - Rinse with hot water from tap. But wait, the hot water did not go. The sink was completely blocked. We finished worse than we started.
Since I was the one preaching all good news about Mr Muscle Sink & Plughole Unblocker, I was extremely disappointed. Then it occurred to me (this is where weblogs come in) that surely if the product does not work someone would ranted about it in their blog. I went straight to google, typed in some keywords and I found a tip in comment section on using a wire coat-hanger. I was back at sink with my hanger and all was solved. The sink is flowing and I have been decleared the hero for the day.
Moral of the Story: If in doubt, Go to Google/Yahoo and type keywords associated with the issue you are facing and you too could be a hero for day.
update: Firstly I have implemented a hack by Chris Davis in Wordpress that gives you live previewing of comments. Go and try it out. It is so cool! Secondly I have created a recent links blog thanks to Markku’s hack. Check out his site, he has an impressive photo collection. (I hope he releases the script he used for photo collection soon)
I have updated the old notebook index template - the rest of the archive will be remain the same. I have removed recent post link from the sidebar because it looked out of place.
LONDON - BBC has decided to release 2004 Reith Lectures as DRM-Less mp3 files which are downloadable until June 7th 2004, after this date the lectures can be listened to using Real Player. This year’s Lecturer is Wole Soyinka and his first lecture is titled ‘The Changing Mask of Fear’.
Here, I must confess to my own immersion in personalised fear. It was nothing but fear that schooled me into traveling with only hand luggage. True, I have always been a light traveler but the habit became de rigeur under the terror reign of King Sanni Abacha of Nigeria. So unscrupulous were the methods of that dictatorship that its agents did not hesitate to introduce contraband, specifically hard drugs, into the luggage of the opposition, then alert the Customs officials at destination of the approaching drug baron. If I lived under any real fear during the struggle to unseat that dictator, it was definitely that, over and above anything else.
That preamble simply explains how the fear of Abacha had turned me into one baggage-less passenger you could swear by on any flight, and thus the very first passenger out of the Customs area. I ensconced myself in the bus that had been provided to take us to our hotel, settled down to read. Minutes passed, then an hour. Impatient now, I got down from the bus to find out into what hotel we were booked, then look for a taxi. I recognized some of the passengers from my flight huddled around a Mobile telephone, while others queued up for the single public contraption nearby. Thus did I begin, at long last, to suspect that something truly out of the ordinary was responsible for our turnaround. Only then did I learn, nearly eight hours after the event [Sept 11], that the world I knew was supposed to have disappeared, or become altered unrecognizably
It is certainly true that you need a dictionary handy because for every couple of lines I found a word I had never heard my life.
THE TIMES - The Times reports that 15 students at Institute of Capital Market Research in Vienna will get $55,000 each to see what they perform in the finanical markets. The funds will come from Peter P’hringer, an Austrian multimillionaire and founder of the institute, who likes to dabble in financial markets and the returns will be invested back in the Institute:
Sadly, there is no such thing as a free lunch. The students will not keep any profits themselves. Instead, all funds will be invested in the institute. Professor Zechner said: “We can’t let them share the losses because there might be one hell of a student debt.”

The true joy of life [is] being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one … being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown to the scrap heap … being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish clod of ailments and grievances

On Day3 R.Warren asks: What would my family and friends say is the driving force of my life? What do I want it to be?
I has some difficulty answering this question. I think my driving force in life is to succeed. For me, my driving force is unique for each part of my life. To some extent the driving force to succeed will mean I am driven by materialism and need for approval. For example, if I do get married and I have kids - my drive will be provide with them in my capacity. This would suggest my drive in life is materialism. I remember a time when I used to check my blog every minute to see who had made a comment - which makes me wonder if I am driven by approval. I have to say this has improved with time as I don’t constantly stare at my site log.

Seun plans to encourage the widespread use of the term ‘Advanced Fee Fraudsters’ instead of 419/Nigerian scammers. I agree.
I recommend you visit his site, he has some interesting ideas for stoping scam emails plus an online discussion at fogcreek.
Here is another one - Harvard prof scams $600,000, then hands it to Advanced Fee Fraudsters (419ers) and he refused to believe he himself had been scammed.
