ADEREMI'S NOTEBOOK

Can’t Sing but will sing (8)

The idol star who can’t sing. Last September, William Hung decided to try out for “American Idol” in San Francisco, appearing before judges Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

It didn’t go well. Cowell stopped him with a curt, “You can’t sing, you can’t dance, so what do you want me to say?”
Some contestants argue when they get the Cowell cutoff; others cry. Said Hung, “I already gave my best and I have no regrets at all.”
The judges were disarmed but not swayed by his cheerful sincerity. Producers put the segment on the air as an example of how not to be — part of the show’s appeal, especially in the early rounds of competition, is watching hopefuls crash and burn.

World University Ranking 2004 (10)

Shanghai Jiao Tong University has published a academic ranking of the universities all over the world. It also published the ranking for universities in America, Europe and Asia. The ranking is geared to enable universities to be compared and identified worldwide by their academic or research performance. The website states:

We rank universities by several indicators of academic or research performance, including Nobel laureates, highly cited researchers, articles published in Nature and Science, articles in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index, and academic performance per faculty.

Only four European universities and one Asian university are in the top 20, the rest are American universities (surprise! surprise!!).

I scanned the top 500 list, I found that there were only 4 universities from Africa, all from South Africa.

One for the mind (7)

(I stole this one from sathish)

You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night. You pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for the bus:

  1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
  2. An old friend who once saved your life.
  3. The perfect man (or) woman you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car?

Think and try to answer the question before reading

Grey Album (1)

The Grey album by DJ DangerMouse has been making the headlines lately from Wired News to Boston Globe. The album uses Jay-Z’s Black Album recorded over new beats and production made using the Beatles White Album as the sole source material. Some have hailed it an innovative hip-hop triumph.

Danger Mouse insists he can explain and prove that all the music on the Grey Album can be traced back to the White Album and its musical content via sampling. Every kick, snare, and chord is taken from the Beatles White Album and is in their original recording somewhere.

EMI sent cease and desist letters to Danger Mouse and the handful of stores that were selling the album, demanding that the album be destroyed. They also sent one to Waxy.org threatening to sue if he did not remove the high quality mp3 files of the album on his site.

On February 24 (to be known as Grey Tuesday), Downhill Battle is looking to get as many websites as to host the Grey Album for 24 hours as civil disobedience against EMI’s actions.

Be careful what you Google (2)

Through a name search on Google, a 17year kid finds his photo on the web list of missing children - He tells his teacher which sets in motion a federal investigation. Apparently when his parents got divorced in 1989, the father got custody of the kid but the mother managed to sneak him out of Canada to live in L.A area.

According to authorities, the teen’s mother, Gisele Marie Johnson, now 45, and father, Rodney Steinmann, 43, shared custody of him in Red Deer, Alberta. Shortly after Steinmann was awarded sole custody in 1989, Johnson reportedly failed to return her son after a visit and disappeared.

Mother has been arrested for kidnap and the kid is waiting to be rejoined with a father he does not know. [via Gadgetopia]

Ken and Barbie (0)

Just to catch with the valentine fever, Ken and Barbie (as in the baby doll) have spilt up. Apparently Barbie has been seeing some else after some 43years. BusinessWeek has a different feel on the story.

Re-design (6)

I was inspired to continue to maintain my tradition of simple web design, I believe I have achieved this. I made the following changes:

  1. The index page, (www.cafe151.co.uk) will automatically to be redirected to my blog page. (index page never really served any purpose in my view).
  2. Introduced ‘Quotable’ on my blog page.
  3. New photos page - which is very empty at the moment. I am still thinking of what to do with that page.
  4. The site validates as XHTML 1.0 and is not displayed as intended in Netscape 4x and Internet Explorer 4. (please upgrade your browser)

Snackster.net (2)

Snackster.net - Unlike other popular file sharing networks, Snackster.net is dedicated to only cooking.

Snackster.net is the world’s best peer to peer recipe sharing program.

Screenshots can be viewed here. I think this is just one of those things that people do because they can. I think Jag might like the concept.
